Catriona Gray Proves That Women Should Never Apologize For Passion And Ambition

Image
Catriona Elisa Magnayon Gray is a Filipina and a woman of the world. Born to a Bicolana mother and a Scottish father who immigrated to Australia, she never fails to acknowledge her roots.

“I always say that Australia was my childhood, but the Philippines was me as a young woman,” she shares as her makeup artist fusses over her for a day-long shoot. “I grew up in a cohesion of two worlds.”

In between meetings, courtesy calls, and advocacy campaigns, Catriona’s schedule is full of hours in front of the camera; an environment she is quite familiar with as a model. She easily works through different poses in clothes that are sometimes too large or too small for her, and while her skill doesn’t come as a surprise, watching a true professional at work—especially one who has just been hailed Miss Universe—is always an awe-inspiring experience.

"I was very sheltered, but also a self-aware individual, so I knew I had to grow."

Yet the glamour that comes with the crown is not somethi…

Miss Universe Catriona Gray Encourages Global HIV Testing With Public HIV Test

Image
New York, New York – June 26, 2018 – Miss Universe, Catriona Gray, received a public HIV test at New York City’s Apicha Community Health Center (CHC) to encourage others to get tested and know their status. Ending the stigma associated with testing is critical to ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic as an estimated 9.4 million of the 36.9 million people living with HIV worldwide do not know they are infected. In the United States around 1.1. million people have HIV, and one in seven of them do not know they have it.

Gray was tested using an INSTI® HIV-1/HIV-2 Rapid Antibody Test that used a finger prick to collect the sample. As reigning Miss Universe, Gray has been a public advocate and supporter of HIV testing and linkage to care. Prior to undergoing the test, Gray vocalized her support for testing. “[HIV testing] is not a judgement, it’s just an act of looking after yourself. I don’t want people to live their life in fear and be defined by something like this.”

This Is Why Catriona Gray Is More Than Just The Crown

Image
Even in a world ravaged by skepticism, one cannot discount the fact that the ascendancy of prophecy is very much in play in the affairs of the modern world. No, this isn’t your saturated astrology analogy nor is it an exaltation of Nostradamus and his spine-chilling predictions from the 16th century. It will be an almost exhaustive exercise to detail how fate weaves its assigned destinies to us mere mortals, much like how the ancient Greeks have believed the Moirai to do so, but nothing is more clear-cut of this literature than the unraveling of the life of one Miss Catriona Gray.

“I never dreamed of being a beauty queen. But it’s hard to justify when it’s like, ‘Well, when you were five, you were in Little Miss Philippines, right?’ Blame my mom for that. My mom and my dad are just the proudest parents, and I’m very blessed to have supportive parents,” she reveals in her Build Series interview during her much-talked about media week blitz since her assumption of her role as Miss Univ…

Even Supermodels Were Impressed by Catriona Gray’s “Lava Walk”

Image
It takes a lot for a pageant to feel fresh. The entire idea of a competition based primarily on looks is passé, but amid the spectacle of last night’s Miss Universe contest, something special happened. The night’s big winner, Catriona Gray, a 24-year-old model who represented the Philippines, took to the stage and delivered a runway stomp worthy of fashion month. Gray’s “lava walk” first created a storm over the weekend when footage from the preliminary competition hit the Internet. Memorable thanks to her confident stride and final twirl, the strut caught the attention of supermodel Tyra Banks, who retweeted the clip and added some America’s Next Top Model–esque commentary. “Pinoy power to the max!” tweeted the clearly impressed Banks. “You did it! And that walk and confidence? I mean . . . next-level fierce!”

The moment could have ended with social media kudos, but Gray saved her best moves for the big show. Onstage at Bangkok’s Impact Arena in Thailand, she wore a fiery custom gow…

Times LIVE: 'I want to show people what South Africans are really made of,' says Miss Universe Demi-Leigh

Image
Miss Universe Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters could not wait to indulge in some of her mom's  chicken curry the moment she got home last week.

Demi-Leigh, who has been living it up in the States since she scooped the Miss Universe crown in November touched down in Mzansi last Wednesday for a week of celebrations.

Speaking to TshisaLIVE at the Sun Met this past, Demi-Leigh said even though all eyes have been on her since she took the crown, she doesn't feel pressure to be anything but herself.

Demi-Leigh said she aimed to add some Mzansi finesse into everything she did around the world and to give people an authentic view of SA.

"It's been amazing so far, all I want to do is take South Africa to the world. I am Miss Universe, but I really prioritize representing South Africa. I am an ambassador for South Africa, I hope to take a little bit of my country everywhere I go and show people what South Africans are really made of."

Miss Universe is helping women learn how to protect themselves and she was inspired by her her own violent carjacking experience

Miss Universe 2017, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, has made it her mission to empower women and keep them safe with her Unbreakable initiative, which she launched in 2017.

Her worldwide campaign was designed to empower women with the information they need to be mentally and physically prepared in the event of a violent attack. INSIDER spoke with Miss Universe 2017 about what led her to create this important campaign.

Nel-Peters was inspired to launch Unbreakable after her own violent carjacking experience in June 2017. While stopped at a traffic light in her native South Africa, her car was surrounded by armed men. She gave up her belongings but was able to survive the attack unharmed by using techniques she'd learned at a self-defense course.

"I'd completed a women's empowerment course about three months earlier," Nel-Peters told INSIDER. &qu…

About Unbreakable

Image
Demi-Leigh is a survivor of a violent carjacking that took place in early 2017. The experience empowered her to create the Unbreakable campaign where she partners with self-defense experts and other educators who train women how to handle life-threatening situations, including sexual harassment, assault, and abusive relationships.

Prior to the carjacking, Demi-Leigh, fortunately, had an opportunity to take a course – woman InPowered – that focused on how to mentally and physically react and handle these types of difficulties.  Now, Demi-Leigh’s message focuses on key points for mental and emotional preparedness when reacting quickly in any unwanted situation.

Unbreakable is a cause that speaks to woman all over the world. After becoming Miss Universe, Demi realized that woman worldwide face the same challenges and forms of violence every day. Now as Miss Universe, in addition to South Africa, Demi has brought her campaign and inspiring message to international communities throughout …

Smile Train: Iris Mittenaere visits cleft patients in Cote D'Ivoire

Image
Iris Mittenaere admirably lent her time and voice to Smile Train during her reign as Miss Universe 2016, including international visits to Mexico and Haiti to witness Smile Train’s local programs firsthand. While Iris’s tenure as Miss Universe has ended, her work as a Smile Train ambassador continues — she is even working toward becoming a dental surgeon.

When Iris was invited to attend the opening of a new hospital by the First Lady of Côte D'Ivoire, she called Smile Train staff to see if she could learn more about Smile Train’s programs in the area. Regional Smile Train staff Nkeiruka Obi and Nicole Bouba (pictured below left and right respectively) gladly accepted and offered to show Iris around.

The group’s first visit was to the home of a former Smile Train patient named Manou. Iris chatted with Manou’s grandmother in French and she learned, sadly, that Manou’s mother and father had abandoned her as a child. Manou’s grandmother proudly reported that her granddaughter is thri…
