7 Things To Know About Miss Universe Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters

Miss Universe 2017 is Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters from South Africa! Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters recently earned her degree in Business Management at North West University after making history at her high school for holding two leadership positions. Check out seven things to know about her below!

1. Demi-Leigh's biggest motivation comes from her half-sister who has a disability. She said, "My half-sister was born without a cerebellum and is completely disabled. She is my biggest motivator and inspiration, because her situation makes me realize how special life is and I always want to work twice as hard, enjoy life twice as much so that I can enjoy it for her as well. Therefore each experience I encounter is that much more special."

2. She is the first Miss Universe South Africa title holder to be born in a free and democratic South Africa. She was born after the first democratic elections in 1994.

3. In her spare time, Demi-Leigh is passionate about a program she helped develop to train women in self-defense in various situations called the Unbreakable campaign. She was inspired to launch it by the attempted hijacking she experienced earlier this year in Johannesburg. She plans to share these workshops and help as many women as she can.

4. In five years, she also hopes to have a global platform where she can help women around the world develop their business skills.

5. She says of the change she'd like to see for women, "I want woman to be treated as equals in every part of the world. We are making great strides but there is still so much to be done."

6. She's no stranger to leadership positions! She was the Junior Deputy Mayor of her city George, in the Western Cape, at the age of 17. She also became the first girl in her school's history to be President of the Student Council for both my school and boarding house.

7. When asked about what sets her apart, Demi-Leigh said, "I learned to take responsibility for my future at a young age. I realized that the only person standing between me and my dreams is me, and with hard work, focus and a lot of dedication I can become whoever and whatever I want to become. I proved that to myself when I became Miss South Africa 2017 on my first time entering the competition. I have a competitive spirit and always strive to be the best version of myself. My dreams never stop growing and I never stop chasing them. I don't believe in waiting for an opportunity to rise but rather in creating one."
